Desolate Road
This was the harshest landscape I had ever seen. Sand blew across swathes of parched land in the dry wind. We had to shield our eyes from the menacing grains. A land that humanity has chosen to ignore.
Layers of Emptiness
The landscape was featureless and barren. Mountains shimmered in the stifling heat. An old railway line cut across the bleak hills like a scar running across a disheveled face.
Room Without a View
Sand spills into an abandoned building in Kolmanscoop, a diamond mining town abandoned and left to be engulfed by a merciless desert.
Choked Up
The room was silent and still. Frayed curtains hung about the worm-eaten wooden frames. All around us hung an aura of abandonment.
Ripples in the Sand
A station room lies silent and empty, a stark reminder of Europe’s mad rush for diamonds in a desolate corner of the Kalahari desert. Once the mines were exhausted and the diamonds gone, the settlers moved out as suddenly as they appeared, leaving their African workers behind to forge out a new living for themselves. The place has since been taken over by the desert.
Walvis Bay
A rough stretch of coast separates desert from sea in southern Namibia. On all fronts, the Atlantic ocean stretches out for miles in every direction.
Oyster Catcher
An oyster catcher braves the cold waves on his rocky perch as he scans the shimmering surface for shrimps and limpets.
Rock and Waves
The tail end of the continent is lined by a treacherous coast, where jagged rocks meet the waves of the wild Atlantic ocean.
Crumbling Roofs
The desert and the sea appear through the windows of this long-abandoned brick building, once used to store sea salt.
Skeleton Coast Sunset
The sky is illuminated with the intense hues of a setting sun. A typical succulent plant of the desert coast reaches upwards with eerie branches and erupting leaves.
